Design Brief:
The retail industry’s Holy Grail is a product that everyone wants to buy. But when shoppers can buy anything they want and are encouraged to buy more than they need, products quickly turn to waste. And the environmental and social costs of our disposable lifestyles are overlooked. To explore the concept of consumable waste, a design exhibit will be held in conjunction with the international conference, Waste – The Social Context ‘08, to be held in Edmonton (May 11 – 15, 2008).
The Consumable Waste exhibit challenges local talent to design or redesign a product that will minimize or eliminate waste in the production process, and stimulate a reconsideration of waste and consumption behaviour in the audience. All local designers are invited to submit designs and concepts taking into consideration the checklist criteria of “The Perfect Product.” Possible products include but are not limited to furniture, textiles, ceramics, print, jewelry, interior design, architecture and fashion.
The exhibition will begin on this blog and culminate in a physical show held at Latitude 53 from May 13 – 24, 2008.
Submission requirements:
All participants will register themselves and upload their finished piece or work in progress on this Web Log. Deadline to submit is Feb 29, 2008. Once published, each design will constitute its own discussion page where you will get comments and criticism from other designers. Participants can refine their work based on the feedback and submit a final physical piece by May 1, 2008.
As an individual or group, designers may submit a maximum of three designs.
For each work please supply the following:

“The Perfect Product” Design Criteria checklist—your product must meet at least one of the criteria in each section (Social, Environmental and Economic). The checklist is downloadable under the Design Criteria tab.

A brief explanation of how your product relates to each of the criteria.

Up to three files (images of a composition of images) of your design. Please use only .gif or .jpg files at 72 dpi with a maximum 100 KB for each file [image size max 600(width) x 700 (height) pixels]. The original high-resolution image(s) will be requested later on.
Registration / Submission deadline: February 29, 2008
Finished entry deadline: May 01, 2008
